Dhanush sues Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan for ₹1 Crore
Dhanush’s production company, Wunderbar Films Private Limited, has filed a civil suit against actress Nayanthara and director Vignesh Shivan, seeking ₹1 crore in damages. The legal dispute is related to copyright infringement concerning footage from the movie Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, which was allegedly used in the Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale without proper authorization.
According to the affidavit submitted by Dhanush’s production house, director Vignesh Shivan exhibited unprofessional behavior during the filming of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. The affidavit claims that Shivan focused excessively on Nayanthara, ignoring other cast members. It also states that multiple retakes were conducted solely to ensure Nayanthara’s performance was flawless, while other actors were not given the same priority.
Dhanush’s team sought an interim injunction to halt the documentary’s release. However, the Madras High Court did not grant the injunction, as the documentary had already been streaming on Netflix since November 18, 2024. The court has scheduled the main hearing for April 9, 2025.
The court stated that since the documentary was already available to the public, the interim application was closed without further orders. However, the court confirmed that the case would proceed based on its merits.
Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan met and fell in love during the filming of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. Their recent legal battle became public on November 16, 2024, when Nayanthara wrote an open letter accusing Dhanush of refusing to provide the necessary No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the documentary. She claimed that the footage included in the documentary was shot on personal devices, asserting that no copyright laws were violated.
Dhanush has not responded publicly to the accusations but has taken legal steps against the couple and Netflix. The case is expected to attract significant attention as it unfolds in court.
