He said the violence in northeast Delhi between pro and anti-CAA protesters, in which one policeman and three civilians have lost their lives, was highly condemnable. He also asked if Congress leader Rahul Gandhi would own responsibility for the killing of the cop. The Centre has directed Delhi Police to conduct a comprehensive probe. He said additional forces were being deputed to areas hit by the violence.

Reddy said the Home Ministry has directed the police to take strong action against those involved in the attacks. He also alleged that the anti-CAA protesters were trying to disturb law and order by pelting stones at the police. Reddy said those indulging in violence were working against national interests. The minister said that for two months, protest was being held at Shaheen Bagh by blocking the national highway but no action was taken. He said that if protest is held peacefully, there will be no objection, but if people violate the law, strong action will be taken against them.

“Some states are saying we will not conduct it or the cabinet will take a final decision,” he said in an obvious reference to West Bengal and Kerala, which have stopped NPR related work. Reddy told a news conference on Monday that the government employees also can”t refuse to be part of the Census and the NPR, which will be conducted simultaneously during 2020-21. He also added that there is no major difference between Census and NPR. The minister assured the Muslims that the Narendra Modi government neither has any proposal to make a law to drive any Indian citizen out of the country nor it has powers under the Constitution to do so. He slammed the opposition parties for creating fear among Muslims to serve their political interests.

“No Indian will be asked to leave the country. The Constitution is the holy book for government. We are honestly following it. We will not go against the Constitution,” he said. The BJP leader also denied that detention centres were built to keep people of any community. He claimed that such centres were built in Assam and Bengaluru during the Congress rule for the foreigners illegally overstaying in India.

The BJP leader slammed the Congress party for anti-CAA protests and alleged that unable to face Prime Minister Narendra Modi politically, it was dividing people in the name of religion by spreading lies about the legislation. He said the opposition party was behind those resorting to violence and creating law and order problems. Addressing a meeting organized by BJP in support of CAA here on Monday, he also warned that Modi government will not be a mute spectator to public property being vandalized. Defending Uttar Pradesh police, he said the job of the police was to maintain law and order and they had nothing to do with politics. He also praised Yogi government for its handling of the situation and for making vandals pay for the damaged public property.

He claimed that 250 policemen in Uttar Pradesh were injured in the violence and 58 of them received gunshot injuries. He questioned silence of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao and other opposition leaders on stone pelting and arson during the protests. He said some so-called intellectuals, some parties and organizations were doing a false propaganda over CAA to malign the government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He alleged that these forces were provoking people and creating fear among Muslims by spreading lies that they will be sent to Pakistan and Bangladesh. He claimed that even some places of worship were being used for this propaganda.

The Central minister claimed that CAA is not aimed at snatching citizenship of any Indian but to give citizenship to minorities persecuted in Islamic countries” Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. He said after the Partition both Indian and Pakistan had agreed to look after their respective minorities without any discrimination, but Islamabad went back on the agreement and persecuted the minorities by forceful conversions. “The population of minorities in Pakistan has come down to three per cent from 30 per cent earlier,” he said.

Reddy said members of minorities from these countries migrated to India 30-40 years ago and were living in miserable conditions. Stating that it is the responsibility of Indian society to help these people, he claimed that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh while in opposition, and CPI-M leader Prakash Karat had demanded law for granting citizenship to these refugees. He said the government brought CAA on humanitarian grounds to help the persecuted people. He said refugees were different from infiltrators and separate policies were needed to deal with them. The minister said for BJP, there was no difference among Congress, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Telangana state BJP chief K. Laxman alleged that Chandrashekhar Rao became a tool in the hands of AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi by sending his ministers to the protest meetings against CAA, NPR and NRC.

“Currently the convicts go for appeals in various upper courts and high courts, resulting in long delays in awarding punishment,” said Kishan Reddy. He said IPC and CrPC need to be amended as they were framed during the British rule. “The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) has already prepared draft of amendments in criminal codes,” he said and appealed to people to give their suggestions so that the provisions relating to the crimes against women are strengthened and the guilty are punished at the earliest.

He was talking to reporters after calling on the family of a woman veterinarian, who was gangraped and murdered by four persons at Shamshabad on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Wednesday night. Reddy said the Centre in coordination with Telangana government would ensure that the case is disposed of expeditiously and guilty get capital punishment. Stating that there is anger among people over the shocking incident, he hoped that the state government will act in tune with the people”s sentiments.

The Central minister claimed that BJP is the only alternative in both the states. His remarks came a day after BJP national President Amit Shah said that Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala will become party”s strongholds in near future. Kishan Reddy, who is a member of the Lok Sabha from Telangana, said he would extensively visit both the states.

The Central minister said BJP would work for the development of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Pointing that the Budget 2019-20 which was announced in the Parliament on Friday has allotted more funds for infrastructure, he said the Centre would provide all the required funds for the Polavaram project. Stating that a stable government was formed at the Centre for a second consecutive term, he said it was working to further enhance the image of the country in the international community. He exuded confidence that the Centre would fulfil all the requirements of Andhra Pradesh and that the government is committed to its development.
