DYK Tollywood Star Hero Was First Choice for Chandramukhi
Chandramukhi is one of the biggest super hit movies in Kollywood, starring Superstar Rajinikanth. Directed by P. Vasu, this horror-comedy thriller also featured stars like Nayanthara, Jyothika, Prabhu, Vadivelu, Vineeth, Nassar, and Manobala. When it released in 2005, no one expected it to become such a huge success. But with strong word-of-mouth and a gripping story, the film became a blockbuster at the box office.
The film was made on a small budget, but it earned over ₹50 crores, which was a massive amount at that time. Chandramukhi had everything the audience wanted – comedy, suspense, thrilling moments, twists, and powerful acting. Vadivelu’s comedy scenes made people laugh, while Jyothika’s performance in the serious portions gave goosebumps. Even today, when the movie is shown on TV, many people enjoy watching it again.

Rajinikanth has said many times that Chandramukhi holds a special place in his career. However, it is surprising to know that Rajinikanth was not the first choice for the hero’s role in the movie. Director P. Vasu first took the story to a top Tollywood hero. This hero liked the story but felt it didn’t suit his image, so he rejected it. That hero was none other than Megastar Chiranjeevi.
After that, P. Vasu approached Rajinikanth directly. The Tamil actor Prabhu owned the remake rights of the original Malayalam movie Manichitrathazhu, and he agreed to produce the film with Rajinikanth as the hero. The movie released and created history. It was not only a hit in Tamil but also collected big numbers in Telugu.
Chiranjeevi unknowingly missed a golden opportunity by saying no to Chandramukhi. If he had accepted the role, the movie’s journey might have been very different. But it eventually became one of Rajinikanth’s most loved films and a turning point in horror-comedy films in South India.
