IPL 2024: In a sad story, a man from Karnataka got caught up in online cricket betting and ended up with huge debts, leading to his wife’s tragic death. Darshan Babu, who worked as an assistant engineer, lost more than Rs 1 crore in these bets, causing a lot of trouble for his family. His wife, Ranjitha, who was 24 years old and a homemaker, couldn’t bear the stress anymore and took her own life on March 18.

Ranjitha’s father, Venkatesh, reported to the police about the harassment they faced from creditors. It was revealed that Darshan had been taking money from people and giving them empty checks as security. This constant harassment and threats took a toll on Ranjitha, pushing her to end her life.

The police investigation found that Darshan had borrowed a staggering amount of 84 lakh rupees from moneylenders between 2021 and 2023, mainly during the IPL season. A case was filed against 13 suspects under IPC 306 for abetting suicide, and three accused, named Shivu, Girish, and Venkatesha, were arrested.

This incident sheds light on the dangers of online betting and the devastating consequences it can have on individuals and their families. It’s not just about losing money but also the emotional and psychological toll it takes. In November 2023, the Bengaluru Police Cyber Crime Unit busted an interstate cricket betting racket involving six people, highlighting the prevalence of such illegal activities.
