‘Virupaksha’ director Karthik Varma Dandu has never worked under the direction department of filmmaker Sukumar. Following the speculations doing rounds in several media platforms that he was an assistant of director Sukumar, Karthik clarified, “I’ve not worked with Sukumar until I met him in 2018. After I narrated the story of Virupaksha, he was convinced with my idea and we together we began our journey.”
The film is witnessing a rousing reception from audiences all over Telugu States, Karthik says he is elated and blessed to have such a unanimous result from audiences. “It’s the result of years of hard work and dedication. I couldn’t have asked for more than the love that is coming from people.
It was he who decided to take the baby project forward. He chose BVSN Prasad as the producer and then he selected Sai Dharam Tej as the lead. After we sat together to materialise the story, I came up with seven versions of the screenplay. And Sukumar garu picked up the best plot. But then several changes were made in terms of treatment. The climax came from Sukumar garu’s pen.”
My forte is horror
Explaining how he has developed a flair for writing horror and mystery scripts, Karthik says his interest towards the horror genre developed over the years. “Probably by seeing a lot of films in various languages. I wanted to make a proper horror film with horror elements in Telugu. I happened to have read a newspaper story where a woman was lynched to death by villagers on suspicion of practising black magic. It happened somewhere in Gujarat in 2016. For a moment, I felt what if the woman really had practised the sorcery. It would have served as a death knell for the killers. That very thought that was triggered in my mind gave birth to this story ‘Virupaksha’.
