Award shows only a negotiation: Shekar Kapur

The insider-outsider debate and existence of camps in Bollywood has now veered towards awards. Many actors have lost out to star kids despite winsome performances. This favouritism is not only demotivating, it has established a lobby culture in Bollywood and only those from certain families bag awards while the rest bag awards for being supporting actors. There are others who get awards but lose out to others if they don’t arrive at the venue on time to pick it up.  Singer Adnan Sami retweeted a tweet by filmmaker Shekhar Kapur calling the award shows a ‘negotiation’. Adnan said that he was once offered an award in exchange for a free performance but he refused because of his ‘dignity and self-respect’.  Earlier, in 2017, Kangana Ranaut said that she once lost out on an award because she failed to reach the ceremony on time. “Early on, I got dressed up for some award, I don’t remember the award but I was supposed to receive the award for supporting cast for Life In A Metro. I got stuck in traffic.

I started getting calls asking ‘where are you’. The hysteria and panic that I experienced, I didn’t make it and Soha (Ali Khan) got it for Rang De Basanti,” she said in an interview. Down South award functions are a big farce. They imitate Bollywood every bit, from the ladies trying to ape Bollywood actresses in dressing to giving away awards to every person who attends the function example, they win hands down. Be it T Subbirami Reddy Awards or Santosham, everything is a huge farce. Only the television channels gain by telecasting it live.
