Case filed on Kannada actor Upendra

An atrocity case has been lodged against the well-known Kannada actor, Upendra, on the grounds of alleged casteist remarks that are believed to have deeply offended a specific community. These comments were reportedly made during a live session on Facebook and Instagram, where Upendra was commemorating the anniversary of his political entity Prajaakeeya.

Complaints regarding the actor’s statements reached the authorities on Sunday. In a swift response, Upendra removed the contentious live video from his social media accounts and promptly apologised. “I unintentionally employed an inappropriate proverbial phrase while engaging in the Facebook and Instagram live session. Once I became aware of its impact on individuals, I immediately deleted the video from my social media platforms. I extend my heartfelt apologies for my statement.”

According to DCP Bengaluru South P Krishnakant, a case has been formally filed under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The ongoing investigation will adhere to legal procedures, ensuring that the law takes appropriate measures.

The case of atrocity has been officially registered within the jurisdiction of Chennammanakere Achukattu Police Station, and it falls under the purview of section 3(1)(r)(s) of the Act. This response is based on a complaint indicating that Upendra’s statement on Facebook has caused distress among the general public, Krishnakant informed the media.

Upendra himself has clarified that his statement was devoid of intentional harm. He conveyed this clarification through his Facebook account. However, due to the receipt of multiple complaints, an FIR has been lodged, initiating a comprehensive investigation into the matter, he further conveyed.
