Exclusive : Kiran Abbavaram Interview

Kiran Abbavaram is growing as an actor, making rapid strides in his career. He made his debut as an underdog with Rajavaru Rani Garu and won encomiums for the subtle performance. The second film SR Kalyana Mandapam also worked equally well and one feels he came to the industry without a godfather and striking the big screen with a simple and a heartwarming story did the trick. There were no expectations at all. Kiran, right now, is waiting for the release of Sebastian. It is a film based on a constable working in a town. The character suffers from night blindness and the genre is entertaining. How did he get his job with this problem, did he con someone to get it? “That is exactly what we are dealing with. Director Balaji is a debutante and all my films are with newcomers, be it SR Kalyanamandapam or the debut project. Sammathame is done and I am doing a film in Kodi Ramakrishna’s banner,” tells Kiran to Y.Sunita Chowdhary of Klapboardpost.com.

In Sebastian, there is mother sentiment dominating the story, the protagonist promises something to his mom and how he battles adversity to keep his job intact is the gist. Kiran says during the pandemic, it was a task to select a story that would be watched by all segments and age groups. SR Kalyanamandapam, Raja Rani worked. Is there any pressure to deliver a hatrick? “I am at the initial stage, there is definitely a pressure. The way I am being introduced is very important and especially in these five or six films, it will matter a lot. Keeping the numbers aside, I worry about my judgement of the script and my diction and dialogue delivery,” he quips.

He adds, “First motto is film, is the film coming out or not, is the content right or not is something that is constantly worrying me. We have watched short films, every opportunity is important so I am very careful about story selection and execution. I am getting good stories and out of all those, I picked the best. Now it is getting on the floors. I have been working for Sammathame, the director is a debutant and he worked on short films. Sammathame is a love drama, like Bommarillu. After a long time, such a story is coming up. Also I take care that my roles don’t get repeated. SR Kalyana Mandapam was a desire to do a commercial film. I wanted to check if Kiran Abbavaram would fit into a commercial genre. It is now streaming on Aha.”

Kiran always believes that entertainment works big time, he has little faith in fresh elements. He explains, “Even if the point is fresh, there should be entertainment. Audiences come for entertainment, whatever the genre is, I believe they deserve entertainment. Sammathame is a fourth film and there is loads of entertainment in it. How do I grow as an actor? The first film was done in a subtle fashion i.e without being dramatic. In a settled format and it worked. The second film was commercial and I wanted to be loud. The third film, I tried to take the roots from the script. Whatever script we take up, we should make sure we are natural, we have a mannerism that works. It takes time for our face/image to reach homes. I am aiming for a theatrical release right now. SR Kalyana Mandapam also was released in the theatre. We travel so far, spend and go to the theatre and as such our aim should be drawing people to the theatres. If we do so, it is a success. The first week of SR Kalyana Mandapam shows was houseful and I was so gratified and thankful to the audience. I hope the same repeats, Sammathamd is a Bommarillu kind of film where you have cute conversations and Chandini Chowdary is the lead. The next is a family entertainer”.
