Gautham Vasudev Menon disappointed with Suriya; Here’s why
Director Gautham Vasudev Menon recently shared his frustration with actor Suriya for turning down the chance to work on the film Dhruva Natchathiram. In an interview, GVM known for his collaborations with Suriya in Kaakha Kaakha and Vaaranam Aayiram expressed that Suriya should have trusted him, especially after their successful past projects.
GVM explained that although actors sometimes hesitate to make quick decisions, Suriya’s rejection of Dhruva Natchathiram was a disappointment. The director said, “I understand actors need time to decide, but Suriya should not have questioned whether to do Dhruva Natchathiram or not. He should have just agreed. We worked on Kaakha Kaakha and Vaaranam Aayiram together with the same trust and vision.”
He continued by recalling the making of Kaakha Kaakha, where Suriya stepped in to play both roles after several other actors declined. GVM admired Suriya’s courage at that time and felt that the actor should have shown the same faith in him for Dhruva Natchathiram. The director also explained that during their discussions, Suriya kept asking for reference points for the film, but since the concept was original, GVM had none to offer.
GVM further emphasized that Suriya’s decision not to join the project left him upset. He said, “If Suriya had trusted me as his director, the movie would have had a different style of action. I wasn’t asking for a favor; I just wanted his trust. He had nothing to lose, and I was the producer.”
Dhruva Natchathiram is an upcoming Tamil spy-action film starring Chiyaan Vikram, directed by GVM. The film has faced several delays due to financial and legal issues, which added to the director’s frustration.
Despite these challenges, GVM expressed that the rejection by Suriya hurt more than any other actor’s refusal. He believed that the collaboration would have been successful, and Suriya’s involvement would have given the film a unique touch.
