Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency OTT details out

Actor and director Kangana Ranaut has announced the OTT release date of her latest film, Emergency. The political drama, in which she portrays former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, will be available for streaming on Netflix from March 17. The film was originally released in theaters on January 17, 2025, and earned ₹21.65 crore gross in India, according to industry reports.

Emergency focuses on the controversial Emergency period in India, declared by Indira Gandhi between 1975 and 1977. Kangana not only played the lead role but also directed the film. The movie features well-known actors like Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Kaushik.

The film faced multiple delays before its release. It encountered censor board scrutiny and protests from Sikh organizations, who claimed it misrepresented historical events. In August 2024, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) sent a legal notice to the filmmakers, demanding the removal of scenes they found offensive.

Critics have given mixed reviews to Emergency. The Hindustan Times review mentioned that the film attempted a balanced portrayal of Indira Gandhi’s decisions during the Emergency. The performances, especially by Anupam Kher and Satish Kaushik, were praised. However, the review also pointed out that the film tried to cover too many aspects, making it feel rushed.

Despite the controversies, Emergency has drawn interest from audiences eager to see Kangana’s take on this significant historical event. With its upcoming release on Netflix, the film is expected to reach a wider audience.
