Malayalam cinema beats Tamil industry; here’s how

mollywood kollywood

In recent times, Kollywood, which was once hailed as the king of South Indian cinema, has been facing numerous challenges. Over the past few years, the industry has struggled to produce notable hits, and even when films like Ponniyin Selvan have done well in Tamil, they have failed to make an impact in other languages, often resulting in disappointment at the box office. What was once known for its unique storytelling and innovation is now synonymous with routine films.

Unfortunately, the trend seems to be continuing into this year as well. In the first quarter of 2024, Tamil cinema finds itself relegated to the fourth position in terms of revenue, with Bollywood, Tollywood, and Mollywood taking the top three spots. Kollywood has yet to produce a blockbuster grossing over 100 crores.

Meanwhile, the Malayalam film industry is experiencing a surge in popularity, surpassing Kollywood with consecutive hits. Particularly, the recent release Manjummel Boys has emerged as the highest grosser in Tamil Nadu this year, raking in over 60 crores.

Despite these challenges, there remains hope that Kollywood will bounce back in the second quarter. With acclaimed directors like Shankar, Maniratnam, and Murgadoss at the helm, there is optimism that the industry will reclaim its former glory. However, it will require a concerted effort from all stakeholders – filmmakers, actors, producers, and audiences – to revive Kollywood and propel it back to its golden days.
