Thangalaan Day 1 box office collection: Thangalaan, featuring Vikram in the lead role, has had an impressive opening at the box office, earning ₹12.6 crores on its first day. Directed by Pa Ranjith, the film was released in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam on August 15. Industry trackers have reported that the movie made ₹11 crores in Tamil, ₹1.5 crores in Telugu, and ₹10 lakhs in Malayalam.
Set against the backdrop of the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) during British rule, Thangalaan tells the story of locals resisting exploitation and the mystical powers they believed the land possessed. The film also stars Parvathy, Daniel Caltagirone, and Pasupathy in pivotal roles.
The movie saw an impressive 71.64% overall occupancy in Tamil, particularly in Chennai, where it had 592 shows with an 81.5% occupancy rate. Despite facing tough competition from Mr Bachchan and Double iSmart in the Telugu region and films like Demonte Colony in Tamil, Thangalaan currently leads the pack. On the first day, Mr Bachchan made ₹5.3 crores while Double iSmart managed ₹7.5 crores.
Vikram, who was last seen in the Ponniyin Selvan films that collectively grossed over ₹850 crores worldwide, looks to continue his success streak. Following Thangalaan, he is set to appear in Veera Dheera Sooran and is also awaiting the release of Dhruva Natchathiram, a collaboration with Gautham Menon.
