Box Office blues for Nani, OTT brings relief
Tollywood actor Nani, often called the “Natural Star,” has built a strong reputation over the years. While his films used to perform well both critically and commercially, the recent trend is raising concerns. After the COVID-19 pandemic, Nani made several movies, but only a few managed to perform well in theatres.
His biggest theatrical success in recent years remains MCA and Dasara. Dasara opened well and became the highest-grossing film in Nani’s career. However, other films did not match the expectations. Shyam Singha Roy released in 2021 during the pandemic and political disturbances. Although the producer made a profit, distributors faced losses, and had to be compensated.

Ante Sundaraniki was another highly anticipated film, but it disappointed in most regions, despite doing well in Nizam and overseas. Nani still stands by the film, but it failed to impress the majority of the audience.
His emotional drama Hi Nanna had a dull start in theatres. Due to some reasons, Nani himself took over the theatrical rights. Although it became very popular on Netflix, its box office performance was weak.
His recent films like HIT 3 and Saripodhaa Sanivaaram started strong but could not sustain their momentum. Distributors faced minor losses, and the films couldn’t reach the expected success mark.
Industry insiders are now questioning Nani’s box office strength. Despite his talent and loyal fan base, most of his recent movies are failing to have a long and successful theatrical run. The issue is being actively discussed within Tollywood circles, especially after HIT 3 ended its run with disappointing numbers.
As of now, Nani hasn’t responded to this growing criticism. It remains to be seen how he will handle these concerns and what kind of projects he will choose next to bounce back stronger in theatres.
