Wanted Romanian prince arrested in Malta

A Romanian prince, Prince Paul-Philippe, found himself in the spotlight once again, this time not for royal affairs but for legal troubles. The 75-year-old prince, convicted of corruption in his homeland, was apprehended in Malta during his visit for an event hosted by the Knights of Malta.

Paul-Philippe’s journey into legal woes began when he fled Romania in 2020 after being sentenced to nearly three and a half years in prison for corruption charges related to fraudulent property claims near Bucharest. Despite his status as a member of a royal family, he was denied bail in Malta due to the severity of the allegations against him.

During his court appearance alongside his wife Lia, Prince Paul-Philippe contested his extradition, claiming political motivations behind the arrest warrant. His lawyer argued vehemently against the extradition, citing previous legal decisions in Paris that deemed the warrant baseless and politically driven.

The defense presented evidence of systematic failures in Romania’s legal system, pointing to decisions by French courts that refused extradition based on similar charges. Despite offering a fixed address and willingness to comply with bail conditions, the court upheld the seriousness of the charges and denied bail.

The case took an interesting turn when the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta clarified that Prince Paul-Philippe had no association with their order. This statement underscored the prince’s isolated position in the legal battle.

Prince Paul-Philippe’s conviction in Romania stemmed from his involvement in a €145 million corruption scheme, where he was found guilty of buying influence and complicity in abusing public office. Despite his royal lineage, his claim to the throne remains disputed, further complicating his legal and political standing.

As the prince awaits further proceedings, the case raises broader questions about justice, politics, and the intricacies of international legal cooperation. The May 9 hearing will likely shed more light on the fate of the Romanian prince as he navigates the complexities of the legal system both at home and abroad.
