Here's an uncanny coincidence between K Viswanath's death and 'Sankarabharanam'

You call it an uncanny coincidence or a divine destiny, but veteran filmmaker K Viswanath’s death occurred on the day when his eponymous blockbuster ‘Sankarabharanam’ was actually released, on February 2.

Viswanath breathed his last following an age-old illness at a hospital here in Hyderabad on Thursday night (Feb 02). Exactly 43 years ago, his movie ‘Sankarabharanam’ got theatrically released on the same date.

The movie highlighted the neglect of traditional Indian music during the increasing influence of western pop back in those days. The film went on to become a blockbuster flick. It earned him a cult status for his vision of bringing art into commercial cinema back in the early ’80s.

The film was screened at the Tashkent film festival, Moscow International Film Festival in May 1980, AISFM Film Festival. Forbes included actor JV Somayajulu’s performance in the film on its list of “25 Greatest Acting Performances of Indian Cinema”.

In an online poll conducted by CNN-IBN, ‘Sankarabharanam’ came 11th in the poll as the “greatest Indian film ever.”

Several Tollywood celebrities among other stars from Tamil cinema arrived in Hyderabad to pay last respects to his mortal remains.
