HMPV virus outbreak in China:
China is currently dealing with an outbreak of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV). This comes five years after the COVID-19 pandemic. HMPV is an RNA virus from the Pneumoviridae family. Researchers in the Netherlands first discovered it in 2001. They found it while studying children with respiratory infections.
HMPV has existed for over 60 years. It spreads worldwide as a common respiratory virus. The virus mainly spreads through droplets from coughing or sneezing. Close contact with infected people or contaminated environments can also spread it.
The virus has an incubation period of three to five days. People can get infected repeatedly because the immune response is weak. HMPV is most active in winter and spring. It mostly affects children, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems.
NO VACCINE AVAILABLE AS OF THE MOMENT
According to reports, China has been battling an outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus or HMPV. As per the information available so far, #HMPV causes symptoms similar to influenza as well as #COVID19.

Symptoms resemble the common cold. These include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and wheezing. In severe cases, it can cause bronchitis or pneumonia. Doctors sometimes use a bronchoscopy to detect the virus. This involves inserting a small camera into the lungs to collect fluid samples.
HMPV can be deadly for people with underlying health issues. A 2021 Lancet study reported that it caused 1% of deaths among children under five with respiratory infections.
There is no vaccine for HMPV. Treatment focuses on easing symptoms. Over-the-counter medicines like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help. Decongestants may reduce nasal congestion. People with asthma or chronic lung diseases may need specific treatments.
Experts warn against blindly using antiviral drugs. There is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV.
China’s authorities have issued guidelines to manage the outbreak. They recommend wearing masks, maintaining social distance, and washing hands frequently. Avoiding crowded places and ensuring good indoor ventilation is also advised.
The government is improving its monitoring systems for unknown diseases. This is to prevent unpreparedness like during the COVID-19 outbreak. Officials expect respiratory infections to rise in winter and spring. Cases of HMPV are increasing among children under 14, especially in northern provinces.
China continues to take steps to control the spread of HMPV. Maintaining hygiene and early detection are critical in this effort.
