Penchal Das goes against the grain

Drawing master Penchal Das who hails from Kadapa continues to pursue his passion, Batik art and writing songs. He became famous with his song Daari Choodu Dummu Choodu from Krishnarjuna Yuddham and later on got many offers to write lyrics in Telugu films. His latest “Emantini Abaya” from Merlapaka Gandhi’s film LIke Share Subscribe. He tells Klapboardpost.com, “It is about a boy helping the girl and the girl as an acknowledgement sings this song and dances. The hero is a vlogger and wants to use this for his Youtube channel. Emantini Abaya is a romantic number, mostly like an item song in the movie.”

The film starring Santosh Shoban and Faria Abdullah released last week to a lukewarm response. The songs however did create a buzz. Penchal Das all these years had stuck to writing folk songs and never wrote other genres; he concurs and says, “True and I didn’t step out of the line despite it being a romantic number, there is no trace of vulgarity. If you understand the song, you’ll find a lot of meaning in it.” Penchal Das had earlier written for Aravinda Sametha. Reddemma Thalli and Rudram got acclaim. He followed it up with Mahi V Raghav’s Yatra, based on YSR’s life. The song revolved around his demise titled Marugainava Rajanna.

He calls Merlapaka Gandhi his guru for giving him a break and narrates an anecdote connected with the film. Gandhi’s brief for LSS was that the song should be massy in nature. He says, “I was asked to write in slang and he encouraged me. I was stuck to folk and janapadam/village songs all this long. This is our favourite song and I had written it even before Krishnarjuna Yuddham. I couldn’t use it for that movie, this being slang will suit only certain situations. So we used it here, Praveen Lakkaraju scored the music.”
