Renowned balladeer social activist Gaddar passed away

Gummadi Vittal Rao, the celebrated musician, poet, and fervent advocate for revolutionary causes, known affectionately as Gaddar, has passed away today. According to reports, Gaddar had been receiving medical attention at Apollo Hospital over the past few days due to a heart ailment.

After bravely battling heart disease, Gaddar breathed his last today. Born in 1948 in the state of Telangana, India, he played an active role in the Naxalite movement until 2010. Subsequently, he emerged as a prominent figure in the Telangana movement, tirelessly advocating for a distinct statehood for Telangana.

Gaddar’s steadfast commitment was directed towards championing the rights of marginalised communities and Dalits in Telangana, consistently harnessing his creative expressions to spotlight their concerns.

Gaddar’s artistic prowess spanned diverse dimensions, with his songs and poetry serving as potent tools to inspire social change. His verses not only mirrored his ideologies but also kindled inspiration among countless individuals who aspired for fairness and justice. Recognising his exceptional contributions, Gaddar was bestowed with the Nandi Award in 2011 for his rendition in the film Jai Bholo Telangana.

The news of Gaddar’s passing has profoundly resonated with the public, prompting an outpouring of condolences and a collective reflection on his profound influence.
