Many people are still fascinated by fancy vehicle registration numbers, oftentimes with prices of multiples of 9 reaching exorbitant amounts. Another remarkable auction took place at the Khairatabad RTO on Thursday where a real estate company bought the ‘9999’ number for almost ₹19.5 lakh.
Honors Developers, a well-known real estate firm, bagged the registration number “TG 09 A 9999” at an astonishing price of ₹19,51,111. Such extraordinary sales have become increasingly common as unique plates attract astronomical prices. For example, an IT Company paid ₹8.25 lakh to buy another one like this “TG 09 B 0001”. In just one day nearly ₹51 lakhs was raised with other numbers such as ‘0009’ and ‘0006’ fetching around ₹2.5 lakhs each.
The trend of paying huge sums for fancy number plates has been rising in recent years. In March, the first “TG” number plate “TG 09 0001,” sold in auction went for a whopping ₹9.6 lakhs. Equally Andhra Pradesh has also had record-breaking auctions too: in 2022 Vijayawada RTA sold off its state record-setting plate “AP 39 AA 0001” for ₹16.11 lakh.
The motivation behind owning a distinctive number plate is what drives many individuals and businesses to participate in these auctions; while it is a matter of pride to some people others use it as a way to be unique among their peers. Numbers such as;0001,0009 and 9999 are particularly sought-after due to their perceived luckiness and auspiciousness.
This growing obsession with exclusive number plates not only reveals cultural significance but also reflects a society that willingly spends money on status symbols proving how much they value being unique.
