What is egg freezing?

Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a medical procedure in which a woman’s eggs (oocytes) are extracted from her ovaries, frozen, and stored for future use. The process involves stimulating the ovaries with hormones to produce multiple eggs, which are then retrieved through a minor surgical procedure. These eggs are then frozen using a technique called vitrification, which rapidly cools them to very low temperatures to preserve their viability.

Egg freezing allows women to preserve their fertility for various reasons, such as delaying childbearing due to career goals, medical reasons like undergoing cancer treatment that may affect fertility, or personal circumstances. The frozen eggs can be stored for years and thawed when the woman is ready to use them. They can be fertilized with sperm through in vitro fertilization (IVF) and transferred to the woman’s uterus, with the goal of achieving pregnancy.

This procedure offers women more control over their reproductive choices and the timing of motherhood. It has become increasingly popular and socially accepted, especially among women who want to prioritize other aspects of their lives before starting a family. Egg freezing provides a way for women to preserve their fertility potential and address concerns about age-related decline in egg quality and quantity.
