Two Mallu films chosen for Moscow Film Fest

Malayalam film 1956, Madhyathiruvithamkoor (Central Travancore), directed by Don Palathara, has been chosen for screening on the 42nd version of the Moscow International Film Festival to be held in October. “The film is related to the migrations in Idukki and surrounding regions, and set in the 1950s. It is about a group of people who are out for a hunt and the events that follow. At the core of the story are two brothers, Onan and Korah, and their relationship. But at the same time, the film also looks at a larger picture, of the thought process and psyche of the people of those times and of that region, and the believability of different narratives,” says director Don.

Two Mallu films chosen for Moscow Film Fest His Films reminiscent of Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Swayamvaram and Venu’s Munnariyippu have been screened on the pageant previously. The film, set round themes of migration and human-animal battle, is Don’s third work. He debuted in 2015 with Shavam, a darkish satire set in a family the place somebody has died. He has continued with that experimental streak in his second film, Vithu, in addition to the newest one. Sajin Baabu’s Biryani, which has already been featured at several international film festivals and has won awards too, will also be shown. In Biriyaani, Sajin Baabu, who earlier directed Asthamayam Vare and Ayaal Sassi, tells the story of a modern-day Khadija (the wife of Prophet Muhammad), played by Kani Kusruti. The film, shot in parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, also casts light on the social system. Biryaani, which had premiered at the Asiatica Film Festival in Italy and won the NETPAC award there, went on to feature at several international festivals, winning more awards.
