Exclusive: Payal: learning & unlearning in lockdown

Y.Sunita Chowdhary

Payal Rajput is looking chic and pretty after a hair cut. She cropped it short and says that’s how her hair actually is. For the last two years she has been shooting and due to the wear and tear, she spent lakhs of rupees on her hair protection. She says, “I oil it and give it good care but I was losing it. Now this is my real hair proper and healthy. Just not my hair, henceforth I am going to handle my roles well too. In films, people make me look mature. I am contemplating and want to do good films. It is not as if I had done RX 100 only, I had done more films than that and will do more in the future too.”

About RDX Love that turned turkey at the box office, she has nothing much to say. When you pick a film, you always do with a hope of it working in your favour. Ditto with RX100. She says she never knew the film would be a blockbuster. “The story of RDX Love was sober and good, so were the dialogues but the execution faltered and by the time it hit the theatres there was so much negativity. The portrayal was wrong. In Venky Mama, I was shown as a matured woman and older in age. It wasn’t my age to play that character. Disco Raja on the other hand, had very little footage but it was satisfying. I have plenty of time and don’t want to be impulsive. I am looking for good content and an established director.”

Amidst a talk that will have her doing an item number in a Kamal Hassan film, she thinks it is too early to discuss that. As of now she is super busy keeping her house, cooking and also acted in a small video shot by a friend. She got a new flat recently and says lock down had taught her a lot of things. “I have always thought I live like a princess, I don’t have to work and I will live a beautiful life. The moment lockdown was announced, I was begging my maid to come and help me out. I am doing dishes, cooking and doing laundry. I also have two dogs and when I am tired of that work, I call mom and cry a lot. She knows I am a lazy person. These days I clean the house, read, watch movies, relax and have a leisure bath. I have learnt to be friendly with my house. This work has taught me that you get respect when you do your own things.”

Earlier Payal Rajput was looking forward to a one month break and this is like serendipity. It is a three month break. “I don’t have a washing machine, since I have a domestic help and she would come on and off because I hardly live in Mumbai, I didn’t buy one. Now I am doing that job too. But the flip side of the lock down is I am not wasting money, I am investing in a good way,” she signs off.
