Opinion: Payal isn’t an attention seeker

Another scandal rocks Bollywood and this time Payal Ghosh has accused Anurag Kashyap of sexual misconduct. Film maker Kashyap says it is an attempt to silence him. She wanted to talk about it long ago but her well wishers told her to remain silent as it will jeopardise her career. Kangana came to her support and the NCW had urged her to file a complaint and she is being advised to take the legal route. She has hired a lawyer and will be filing a complaint today. People can continue to call her an attention seeker but Payal Ghosh has every right to speak and to be heard. Time and again people say, why now…why didn’t she speak then when the incident happened, and that is wrong. When a woman goes through a harrowing time like this and keeps it to herself out of fear or ignominy and she wishes to come out with it now, it is our duty to listen and help. Empathy is something the last thing anyone can show, if the allegations are true or baseless comes next. Remember it can happen to any starlet or a wannabe actress. It happened with a famous celebrity Tanushree Dutta too. After 10 years of mental agony, she levelled charges on Nana Patekar for touching her inappropriately.

Payal Ghosh has accused Anurag KashyapWhat Payal did was wrong by going to his house again, we understand she is being lured for a role but it is like a rabbit getting into a lion’s den. Anyone with some common sense will tell a director or a producer that they prefer to meet them at a coffee shop or a hotel lobby where at least few people are present. Going to the house is inviting trouble. There are so many Weinsteins in Bollywood or any other film industry. It si about power, and it is stupid to say sexual harassment exists everywhere, why talk only film field. Charity begins at home, be it drugs or sexual harassment, the clean-up should begin from where one work’s instead of levelling charges on someone. While speaking to the media, Payal said none called her to extend support other than Kangana. It really didn’t matter to her and she made it clear, “I felt so good after getting it out of me.” Payal isn’t an attention seekerShe was being earnest. Every time since she wanted to tweet or had tweeted, her family would tell her to delete it as it wouldn’t help her in her career. She followed their advice but now emboldened by the incidents happening around her, watching women come out and speak and seeing that it is not just power any more she had decided to bring it out in the open. She feels that her case might not stand and she has no clue what she will do next to take the issue forward; But is sure that many women will be careful and think twice before approaching this man. Next, the most predictable thing we hear is his first wife i.e the ex- wife comes in his support fiercely. Wonder why she left him in the first place! And the second too. It has become a norm in the industry to blame the woman as being a loose character the  moment she levels charges. Why would Payal drag the name of a select few women that Anurag Kashyap boasted about? Payal deserves a hearing and again, we repeat it is none of anyone’s business to point out why she lodged the complaint after so many years. We cannot ask for proof in such cases, no one goes to a director’s home or office with a hidden camera anticipating a behaviour such as this.
