Paid Negative Campaign Killed Retro?

Suriya’s much-hyped film Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, failed to perform well at the box office despite strong expectations. Now, the filmmaker has shared his opinion on what led to the film’s poor performance, pointing towards a “paid negative campaign” as the main reason.

Karthik Subbaraj recently spoke in an interview where he claimed that there are organized groups on social media that are paid to spread hatred and negative reviews. He mentioned that every popular actor faces such targeted online attacks. According to him, these groups are hired to discredit films and those who speak positively about them.

The director expressed his disappointment, saying many people told him they enjoyed Retro, and were surprised by the bad reviews it received. He called this campaign “very dangerous” and “shocking.”

Despite a decent opening, Retro could not even cross ₹50 crore in Tamil Nadu and saw a steep drop in collections in the following days. However, the film found some success after its OTT release on Netflix from May 30. Online viewers appreciated its mass scenes, action blocks, and interval twist.

Meanwhile, other entertainment updates include:
