Pakistan Prime Minister offers peace talks with India
On May 15, 2025, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that his country is open to talks with India for the sake of peace. His comments came during a visit to the Kamra air base in Punjab, where he met with military officers and soldiers who had taken part in the recent cross-border clashes with India.
Speaking to the media, Shehbaz Sharif said, “We are ready to talk with India for peace.” However, he added that any peace talks must also include discussions about the Kashmir issue, which has long been a point of tension between the two countries.
India has responded in the past by firmly stating that Jammu and Kashmir, along with Ladakh, are integral parts of the country and not up for negotiation.
Prime Minister Sharif was joined on his visit by several top officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, and Army Chief General Asim Munir. The group toured the air base as a show of support for the troops following days of military action.
The current situation began after a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam on May 6, which killed 26 people. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on the night of May 6 to May7. Indian forces targeted nine terror camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir killing over 100 militants.
Following these strikes, Pakistan attempted to retaliate by targeting Indian military bases on May 8, 9, and 10. However, the Indian armed forces struck back, hitting several Pakistani military locations including Rafiqui, Murid, Chaklala and others.
After four days of intense fighting, both sides reached an understanding on May 10 to stop further escalation. Since then, Prime Minister Sharif has visited different military sites to show support for Pakistan’s troops.
This is seen as a crucial moment in India Pakistan relations. While the recent violence has raised tensions, the offer of dialogue may open a window for peaceful discussions though deep rooted issues like Kashmir remain major obstacles.
