Why Kuberaa Is a Wake-Up Call for Telugu Heroes
The film Kuberaa, starring Dhanush, has sparked conversations beyond just entertainment. It raises a serious question why do Telugu actors hesitate to take on roles that are bold, raw, and emotionally intense?
In recent years, Telugu directors like Venky Atluri and Sekhar Kammula have found great success when working with Tamil actors. Films like Sir, Lucky Baskhar, and now Kuberaa have been praised for their strong storytelling and honest performances. These movies didn’t rely on massive sets or loud action but focused on human emotions and relatable characters — and they worked.
On the other hand, when Tamil directors have teamed up with Telugu stars, the result has often been disappointing. Big films like Spyder, The Warriorr, and Custody failed to connect with audiences. Even Game Changer, starring Ram Charan, has faced endless delays and criticism. This contrast makes us wonder — is the director always at fault?
Many believe the core problem lies with Telugu heroes themselves. Today’s leading actors in Telugu cinema are rarely willing to step out of their comfort zone. Unlike Dhanush, who confidently played a beggar in Kuberaa, Telugu stars seem to prefer playing safe roles with style and action over depth and realism.
Actors like Dhanush and Dulquer Salmaan are praised not because they are from Tamil or Malayalam cinema, but because they take risks. They choose scripts that challenge them and characters that are not always glamorous. Their performances are real and impactful.
If Telugu cinema wants to grow, its stars must evolve. They need to stop chasing big names and start focusing on strong content. The industry needs actors who are not just stars, but also true performers — willing to embrace new kinds of stories.
Until then, meaningful storytelling will continue to come from outside — from those who dare to be different.
