IPL to cause massive damage to theatre owners, film producers

IPL cricket has literally hijacked our time. It is probably the second-best opium after cinema for all youth in the country. Love and affection for this gentleman never fade away. It transforms from one format to another. Test cricket to ODI format, to T20, to IPL tourney.. and so on.

Before the match-fixing scandal that broke out in the headlines in the 90s, there used to be fans for Test cricket. If you’re a 90s kid, you must have seen cricket lovers thronging at a tv showrooms to watch Sachin Tendulkar batting. Those were perhaps normal sights, but memorable to many fans during those days.

IPL changed the equation altogether. Hybrid cricket has seeped into our homes. The business of corporate companies buying foreign players spending crores of rupees at auctions is major news. And online betting during IPL is quite common.

Does IPL have any impact on the entertainment industry and Telugu cinema in particular? The answer to this question is definitely yes. The probability of audiences going to theatres is more likely to be less because they get to see their favorite cricketers at the comfort of their home.

Theatre business is likely to be affected when the teams of Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore compete with others. Mumbai and Delhi teams have a massive fan following in Telugu States.
