Man awarded death penalty 12 years after murder-rape of mother-daughter

The Kerala court has awarded death penalty to Jomon Poruvelil after 12-years of crime. The accused, a native of  Kumily in Idukki in Kerala along with his accomplice, Rajendran,  had raped a 55-year-old woman and her 22-year-old daughter in 2007. The second additional sessions judge KK Sujatha had imposed 30 years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 to Jomon. The first convict Rajendran was given the death penalty on June 20, 2012. Though he moved to Kerala High Court, his plea was rejected and was awarded death penalty on October 30, 2018.

The 22-year-old woman had come to her mother’s house in 2007 along with her seventh-month-old son. According to reports, Jomon and Rajendran, who were neighbours of the deceased had consumed liquor at the time of the incident. They broke into thier house after realising that the women were alone in the house.

“Although Jomon said he was innocent, the prosecution proved the case on the basis of the scientific evidence and accordingly awarded death penalty to him,” said special prosecutor EE Rahim.
