Vetrimaran's period drama 'Vidudala 1': full praises, fewer collections
It is yet again proved that there are no audiences for a good cinema. People need entertainment, a peppy single to dance in bharaat, high-octane fight sequences that defy the laws of physics, and a happy ending — is what Telugu audiences want. But no one would want to see the stark reality of society. Commercial cinema is opium next to cricket.

The fate of Vetrimaran’s film ‘Vidudala’ has proved it. Everyone hailed the movie when Allu Aravind took the rights and dubbed it in Telugu. The reviews were positive enough to make the film sail over at the box office.

But collections-wise, no one wants to come to theatres to watch this film. It collected Rs 1.2 crore on the first day which is a decent start for a movie. But
collections of subsequent days are not so good. No matter how good it is, it has not been able to attract general audience to the theatres. So it resulted in dull collections in cities.

‘Vidudala Part 1’ is hailed by everyone as a classic from director Vetrimaran, who has many great films in his list.

Both ‘Shaakuntalam’ and ‘Rudrudu’ were disasters at the box office last week. But ‘Vidudala Part 1’ did not take advantage of that opportunity. This shows that Telugu audiences are not very interested in watching period drama between police and naxals during ’80s.

No matter how realistic Vetrimaran was with his work, the violence and the regionalism could have been reasons why the family audience stayed away from it.
