Suriya’s latest film Retro directed by Karthik Subbaraj, released worldwide on May 1 and opened with good expectations. It is a romantic action movie that was released in several Indian languages, including Telugu. Suriya, who wanted to bounce back after the mixed response to his earlier film Kanguva, heavily promoted Retro.
On its first day, Retro faced strong competition from Nani’s HIT 3. While Nani’s movie had better advance bookings, Retro still managed to do well at the box office. In India, it earned around ₹19.33 crore on Day 1 across all languages. Specifically in the Telugu states, the film collected ₹1.95 crore.
The response from the audience was mixed. Some viewers enjoyed Suriya’s performance, praising his emotional depth and screen presence. However, many criticized the film’s story and direction. Karthik Subbaraj, known for his unique storytelling style, received backlash for an outdated plot and weak narration that did not connect well with the audience.
In Retro, Suriya plays Paarivel Kannan, the adopted son of a smuggler named Tilak, played by Joju George. Paarivel falls in love with Rukmini, portrayed by Pooja Hegde. As the story unfolds, Paarivel gets arrested but escapes with help from a mysterious man named Michael. The reasons behind Michael’s actions and the mystery of something called “Gold Fish” form the heart of the movie.
Despite the mixed reviews, both Retro and HIT 3 are pulling in crowds during the opening weekend, hinting at a strong box office run. Retro was made on a budget of ₹65 crore and was co-produced by Suriya and Karthik Subbaraj.
