Retro review and rating: Powerful acting but a predictable plot

After the failure of Kanguva, actor Suriya is back with Retro, released worldwide today. With stylish posters and director Karthik Subbaraj behind it, expectations were high. Let’s see how the movie turned out.

Story

Pari Kannan (Suriya) is an orphan with Lord Krishna’s feet-like mark on his stomach. He is raised by a woman (Shwasiya), whose husband Tilak (Joju George) is a criminal. Though Pari works with Tilak, he dislikes him. Pari falls in love with Rukmini (Pooja Hegde), promises to quit crime, and they plan to marry. But Tilak tries to kill Pari, the wedding is stopped, and Pari lands in jail.

Years later, Rukmini lives on an Andaman island ruled by cruel British heir Raj Vail (Nazar) and his son Michael. They treat the islanders as slaves. They wait for a savior called Jadamuni. After 5 years, Pari escapes prison and joins Michael. Why? Who is Jadamuni? Why doesn’t Pari ever smile? Why did Tilak want him dead? These mysteries unfold throughout the film.

Performances and Technical Aspects

Suriya delivers a powerful performance. He lives as Pari Kannan, showing excellence in action, emotion, and drama. Pooja Hegde shines as Rukmini and proves her talent again. Joju George impresses as Tilak, while Prakash Raj, Nazar, Jayaram, and others give solid support.

Cinematography by Shreyas Krishna and music by Santhosh Narayanan are major assets. The background score adds intensity. Karthik Subbaraj’s direction and the rich production values enhance the experience.

Analysis

Though the storyline feels familiar, the unique screenplay and execution make it engaging. The first half has emotional and thrilling moments. The second half reveals Pari’s true identity and has good action, though it feels slow in parts. The climax is fresh and impactful. The only drawback is the predictability of the main plot.

Verdict

Retro is a one-man show by Suriya, backed by Karthik Subbaraj’s strong direction. Even with a routine story, the film entertains and connects well.
