Suriya’s Retro draws comparisons with Bollywood disaster
Suriya’s upcoming film Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj, is one of the most awaited movies of the year. Set for a global theatrical release on May 1st, the film is currently being promoted across various platforms, including popular YouTube channels.
Santhosh Narayanan, the music composer of Retro, recently shared his thoughts in an interview. He talked about how he once attended a special screening of Laal Singh Chaddha, Aamir Khan’s ambitious remake of Forrest Gump. At that time, Santhosh felt that the movie’s success would reflect on his own journey, as he was deeply inspired by Aamir’s experimental approach. Unfortunately, Laal Singh Chaddha failed at the box office and did not connect with audiences as expected.
Santhosh now believes that Retro also belongs to the “experimental” category. He sees this film as a turning point in his career. If it succeeds, it could open new doors for him in the film industry.
Meanwhile some users on social media have mocked the idea that filmmakers only take experimental risks when Suriya is involved. They pointed out past examples like Kanguva, a historical film by Siruthai Siva, and NGK, a political drama by Selvaraghavan. Both films featured Suriya and tried different storytelling styles.
Despite the trolling, Retro has managed to create a strong buzz. Fans are eagerly waiting to see how the film performs. The storyline, music, and unique direction style are major attractions. Many believe that Retro could be a trendsetter in Tamil cinema if it manages to impress both critics and the public.
With just days to go before its release, the film’s fate will soon be known. Will it become a blockbuster and give Santhosh Narayanan the breakthrough he hopes for? All eyes are now on May 1st.
